The Laboratory of Biochemical Research was established in 2006 as a part of the Department of Experimental Pharmacology and Toxicology.

Currently, 1 leading researcher, 2 senior researchers, 1 scientific researcher, 1 junior scientific researcher and 1 lab assistant are working in the laboratory.

The laboratory of Biochemical Research is accredited for preclinical studies of new drugs in many Ukrainian pharmaceutical companies, including PJSC SIC “Borshchahivskiy CPP”, JSC ”Kyivmedpreparat”, Pharmaceutical company “Zdorovye” and PRJSC Pharmaceutical company “Darnitsa”.

The antidiabetic drug Phensuccinal had been developed and pre-clinically researched by fellows of the laboratory of Biochemical Research and other laboratories and in 2010 a license agreement of industrial production of Phensuccinal was concluded with PJSC SIC “Borshchahivskiy CPP”.

MAIN SCIENTIFIC ACTIVITY:

  • screening studies of new biologically active compounds;
  • development of new methods to evaluate the impact of biologically active compounds on insulin resistance and related biochemical and hemodynamic risk factors of cardiovascular disease at different levels of estrogen;
  • study of synthetic and plant drugs effects on the metabolic and functional disorders in insulin resistance syndrome of different genesis in combination with estrogen deficiency;
  • development and research of selective modulators of estrogen receptors, which have a positive effect on mitochondrial function in the heart and blood vessels;
  • study of the role of oxidative and nitrosive stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, carbohydrate and lipid metabolism disorders and hemostase status in the development of cardiovascular pathology in metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes;
  • determination of biochemical and functional disorders in the heart induced by insulin resistance in combination with estrogen deficiency;
  • preclinical study of the original chemical compounds and drugs for the correction of metabolic manifestations of insulin resistance syndrome and type 2 diabetes mellitus;
  • determination of sex dependent differences in biochemical and functional disorders of the cardiovascular system in metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes mellitus;
  • development of new strategies for gender-specific prevention and therapy of diabetic cardiovascular pathology;
  • preclinical studies of chronic toxicity of potential drugs.

MAIN ACHIEVEMENTS

The laboratory has developed new methodological approaches for evaluation of biologically active compounds impact on insulin resistance and related biochemical and hemodynamic risk factors of cardiovascular disease at different levels of estrogen.

The perspective of using the natural antioxidant quercetin and the amino acid taurine for the prevention and treatment of the main components of the metabolic syndrome at the stage of prediabetes and type 2 diabetes mellitus has been experimentally established.

The prospects of further study of the original compound that modulates the action of estrogen receptors as a potential drug for the correction of postmenopausal metabolic syndrome have been proven.

The sex dependent differences in the development of metabolic and functional disorders of the cardiovascular system in type 2 diabetes mellitus have been established.
